Afrikában a jelenség sokkal ritkább, Tanzániában azonban furcsa módon viszonylag magas az előfordulás aránya, hiszen 5000 emberből 1 albínóként születik.

A szituáció drámaiságát fokozza a hozzáállás, miszerint a tanzániai társadalom kirekeszti a albinizmussal rendelkezőket. A kirekesztés nem is elég kifejező szó arra, milyen körülmények között élnek az érintettek. Tanzániában úgy vélik, ha valaki albínó gyereket szül, azt meg kell ölni az újszülöttel együtt, ha pedig valaki megöl egy albínót, annak élete végéig szerencséje lesz.
Bizonyos területeken mai napig azt gondolják csak az albínók testrészei megfelelőek a boszorkánydoktorok számára a főzetek elkészítésére. Ebből kifolyólag gyakori a csonkítás (nyelv, genitáliák, végtagok, csontok eltávolítása).

Többnyire még az alapvető emberi jogokat is megtagadják tőlük és egész életüket magányosan, rettegésben töltik, a külvilágtól elzárva.
